Richard J. McClellan
July 01, 2026
Mr McClellan, died June 14, 2026, aged 93
Born October 22, 1934, to James T. and Lucile Uplinger (Mayo, Goltz) McClellan, Dick spent most of his childhood in the Clarence and Eva Uplinger home in Sherburn, MN, graduating from Sherburn High School in 1951. He joined the Navy during the Korean conflict and served on both active and reserve duty for an amazing total of 40 years in Spain, the Philippines, Japan, the Mediterranean and other locations around the world. In civilian life he worked in the building trades, helping erect several medical clinics in the Midwest.
In 1957 Dick married Carol Smythe, his hometown sweetheart. They settled in St. Paul, MN and were married for 69 years. In retirement they traveled to every state in the U.S. and a few foreign countries, particularly enjoying Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii and Bermuda. In 2014 they moved to Episcopal Homes in St. Paul, where they both happily participated in numerous activities. There he founded the Coffee Klatsch, based on his experiences of enjoying coffee breaks downtown in Sherburn with farmers and citizens. His wit and humor will be missed at the Klatsch.
He is preceded in death by his half-brother Bruce and survived by his beloved wife Carol, son Brian (Karen) and daughter Eva (Bill Kobett) all of St. Paul, 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and half-siblings Kathleen Winter and Michael McClellan. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held later at Episcopal Homes.
