Mildred was born and raised on Hilltop Farm in Galena Township until the death of her father in 1941. She graduated from St. Paul Ag School in 1947.
She would return to Hilltop Farm, after marrying Robert Gemmill, June 14, 1953, to farm the land homesteaded by her parents in 1923. Mildred would live on the farm until 2015, moving to Fairmont after the death of Robert.
Mildred enjoyed quilting, bread making, gardening, feeding and watching the birds, family genealogy, and in spring finding the wild flowers blooming in the grove. She loved family visits, and if in person was not possible, the phone worked just fine to catch up on her children and grandchildren lives. Over the years she was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Sherburn & Trimont United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and for many years served as the church pianist. She became a Martin County Century Farm historian plus was a 30-year member of Heritage Acres. Mildred was a volunteer and worked at the Trimont Nursing Home for 30 years. After moving to Fairmont Mildred kept busy making 100s of soap washcloth holders for Samaritan Purse Christmas boxes; and stocking caps, mittens and blankets for Simpson Homeless Shelter.
